LANGUAGE WEDNESDAY: Early figures and put the 3-day and 5-day with a grain of salt as projections always off at this point in the Thanksgiving piece. Disney/Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda forever which leads today with $9.5M, even with yesterday and a $50m View Wednesday to Sunday. But, Strange World, as we thought, it is falling below its $30M projection $23M-$27M. Including previews, today’s appearance is over $4.5m to $5 million for that animated film. Encanto last year had an opening day of $7.6M. Apparently, Strange World closed the gap on the early holidays with Enchantment, and I hope that momentum continues.
Sony and Black Label Media Devotion at 3,405 theaters $1.7 million today with $9M-$10M for the 5-day, ranked third. Searchlight on there is an estimate $1 million for Wednesday for $6M-$8M over 5 days.
At this moment, I am hearing odd reports about it Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Some have it ahead of the adult frosh counter in presales, but others have not.
Wednesday AM: It’s not like people weren’t going to the movies yesterday as we head into Thanksgiving: Disney/Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever done $9.5m at 4,258 theaters on Tuesday driving the Ryan Coogler-directed sequel over three centuries with $303.7 millionmaking it the 7th film to break that threshold this year Top Gun: Maverick, Doctor Strange in Madness, Jurassic World: Dominion, Minions: The Rise of Gru, The Batman and Thor: Love and Thunder.
However, there was no excitement last night to see previews of Disney Animation Strange World, which you’ve been told doesn’t look so good on the holiday piece. Previews started at 6pm, Strange World only did $800K, arguably the lowest-grossing Disney Thanksgiving theatrical release in the era of movie theaters with early previews. That’s close to half the amount Encanto it previewed a year ago Tuesday with $1.5M, and that was when there was more of a pandemic fear among moviegoers. $30M+ five day start for Strange World at 4,174 theaters is what we had, but it wouldn’t be surprising if it was lower as it’s the third time weekend Wakanda forever, is now able to make $50M+ over Wednesday through Sunday. Audience score on Strange World currently low on Rotten Tomatoes at 62%, only from 50 reviews.
Wakanda foreverand Tuesday, +36% on Monday, representing the third highest weekday (outside of Friday) after its first Monday and Tuesday which were respectively $11.1M and $12.6M.
Searchlight on The Menu the second was yesterday with $1.3 million at 3,228 locations, +26% on Monday for a current five-day total of $11.3M at 3,211. Although A24 Midsummer – good genre company here for Menu – another trajectory, opening on Wednesday in July, Mark Mylod directed Anya Taylor Joy’s film here 4% of Ari Aster’s films in its first five days.
Fathom Events and Angel Studios’ The Choice: Season 3 posting $1.02m-19% from Monday for a current total of $11m.
New Line/DCs Black Adam which was a quarter on Tuesday with $690K at 3,372 locations, +17% of current total $158.3m. The Dwayne Johnson movie is available to own digitally for $24.99 or rent 48 hours via PVOD for $19.99. On January 3, the film hits DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K.
In the 5th was Universal’s romantic comedy George Clooney and Julia Roberts, Ticket to Paradise, did $490K at 3,268 theaters, +22% from Monday for its current total $62.4 million. The pic is already available to watch on PVOD.
The Black Label Media war film distributed by Sony Devotion done $615K at 2,982 theaters that began showtimes at 6pm. That figure is above Thursday’s preview figure for Focus Features’ Black man which made $600K before seeing $3.6M on Friday, and a $10.8M opening, however, which was a very different time of year, which is pre-pandemic late summer 2018. The Jonathan Majors-Glen Powell film is expected to see $7M-$8M over five days.
United Artists Releasing extended wide preview on Bones and All did $345K as it heads to 2,700 theaters today. Through five days, apart from previews, a genre pic directed by Luca Guadagnino has been made $146,7K from five theaters in NYC and LA. A five-day single-digit build is expected.
